Grace vs. Peace - Part 1

Dr. Charles Ryrie said, "If you cannot define a word, you will not use it correctly or carefully." So many times when I try to define words for myself when speaking with others I am accused of just trying split hairs or make it seem that true definitions are a waste of time.  This has always seemed to be kind of dumb to not define a word.  I would consider myself to be an novice in the wordsmith world, yet it is disturbing that in common language, business language and theological language we are losing the battle to simplistic speech.  I believe that our speech should be "seasoned with salt" and simple to understand.  However, it is through the defining of words that will bring that simplicity. Let's take the phrase we hear in the church world frequently, "You need to show them grace."  I will be sharing my thoughts on this in future posts, but for the meantime I would be interested in your thoughts to the following questions for this phrase: 1.

The Universe's Coolest Dad

It's Father's Day weekend and I cannot get out of my mind what Father's Day should focus on.  Family, that is what makes you a father, whether it is your own, adopted, surrogate or otherwise, children are necessary to be a father.  As I think about my children, my mind wanders back to the cross.  When most Christian think on the cross there are generally only a few thoughts that run through our minds depending on where we are in our lives at that moment.  Some may have a deep sense of gratitude for the price that was paid for their salvation.  Others may think how awful that such brutality could ever happen.  You may be one that focuses on yourself and wonder at why Someone would choose to go through that type of horror just to save you as you continue to heap condemnation on yourself.  Finally, there are a few who stand at Calvary without any emotion sense of personal responsibility and walk away without regard for the One they claim to serve. This weekend my mind and he

Social Media is a wonder of technology.  With social media I have been able to meet new friends around the world, keep up with those in my circle of influence and have an outlet for my viewpoints.  However, I have seen the extent, to which anything that goes unchecked have a terrible price that is paid because of misuse, that social media has had on people's lives.  Let me state, that I am not against social media, but I do believe each person needs to be certain that they use and are not used by it. So, here is the voice in me screaming out about the use of social media, please forgive my rant for a moment.  Quit complaining about your spouse or significant other on social media.  Quit letting everyone in the world know what is going on in your life and/or your thoughts before you tell the one(s) you love.  Quit spending so much time with the world through social media that you lose focus on what is actually happening in your own home.  In short, quit with the affair you are hav

The beginning of any new adventure is fraught with hassles and headaches.  The same seems to be true with starting a blog.  Oh well, come along on the adventure with me and let's see where the party going on in my head will lead us.
